Residents of Oregun, in the Ikeja area of Lagos State, were thrown into panic in the late hours of Sunday after a 24-year-old generator engineer, Idris Jagun, lost his life to a stray bullet fired by a policeman.
PUNCH Metro gathered that some people were reportedly fighting on Oregun Road late hours on Sunday when a police patrol van arrived at the scene.
Jagun was reportedly shot in the thigh after a bullet was fired by a yet-to-be-identified policeman, who had allegedly shot into the crowd when the policemen were said to have come down from the van to disperse the crowd.
In a viral video seen by our correspondent, a man was heard saying “Policemen have killed somebody. They have killed somebody.”
Jagun was said to have been rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro on Monday, said he could not provide further details about the incident.
“Yes, we are aware of the incident. I don’t have details yet,” the PPRO simply said.
