Cartels working to bring down EFFC Chair – CSOs

Financial Crimes Commission

A coalition of 100 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Tuesday claimed cartels and dark forces are working to bring down the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The coalition comprising Peoples Alliance for Indigenous Rights, PAIR, Center for Public Accountability and Transparency, CPAT, Society for Civic and Gender Equity, SOCEGE and 97 others revealed that the anti-graft agency’s battle has made certain elements uncomfortable who are now out to rubbish the laudable achievement of the EFCC chair at all costs.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, the lead director, Chief Dominic Ogakwu, said, the EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa was under attack for the wrong reasons by corrupt elements who want to derail his mandate. Ogakwu who was flanked by other CSO leaders at the conference called for support rather than vilifying the agency.

He said: “There are attempts by dark forces to derail the anti-graft agency from staying focused on its mandate of tackling corruption.

“Ordinarily, as Nigerians and members of the civil society, we would have let the rabble-rousing, attention-seeking and lucre-driven individuals to carry on with their show of shame.

“But to keep quiet at such a critical moment when a young man has brought passion, vision, purpose and grit to fighting established cartels, corrupt institutions, dubious individuals and their likes would be unkind to posterity.”

He said further: “It should be stated unequivocally that Mr Bawa, the youngest EFCC chairman so far, is a man of ideas whose time has come.

“He is young but endowed with the wisdom of ages as he has demonstrated capacity in cleaning the Augean Stable of corruption in our country, Nigeria.”

According to the group, the latest vitriolic attack by some elements was occasioned by EFCC’s crack-down on “politically-exposed persons, banking malfeasance, contract compromises, procurement fraud, illegal oil bunkering, and advanced fee fraud (Yahoo-Yahoo) and other havocs of financial fraudsters against the nation.

Report corrupt lawyers for disciplinary action – Oboagwina urges Nigerians

Published

on

The convener of Easyread Legal’s Mentorship Programme, Caleb Oboagwina, has called on members of the Nigerian public to report any lawyer found engaging in corrupt practices for disciplinary action. Oboagwina made this call while speaking to newsmen at the 2nd Externs General Conference and 10th Year Anniversary of the programme on Saturday in Abuja.

Decrying reports of corruption in the legal profession, Oboagwina said corrupt lawyers are sanctioned by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.
If you find anyone wanting, don’t be silent. Report such a person immediately for disciplinary action against him or her to serve as a deterrent to others nursing the same evil and unethical ideas.

“Don’t be afraid. Report them no matter their reputation in the profession,” he said. He tasked aspiring lawyers on hardwork and dedication to excel in the profession whenever they are eventually called to the Nigerian Bar, urging young ones to see the profession as something that would redeem the society.

“If we have lawyers who would stand up for their rights, especially when they go up in the judiciary, and shun corruption, the society would be a better place.” Also speaking, the 2nd Vice President of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Clement Chukwuemeka, charged lawyers to speak to power and hold the government accountable when it fails in its responsibility of providing social amenities or infrastructural facilities to the masses.

According to him, the responsibility of lawyers is not to make money but to provide justice where the need arises, especially those who do not have anyone to speak for them.

“Judges grant bail to the high and mighty in corrupt cases after which such cases may be swept under the carpet but the poor are being sent to jail for minor cases because they have no one to speak for them,” he added. Easyread Legal’s Mentorship Programme is a platform that renders assistance to students of the Nigerian Law School engaging in Bar Part ll programme.
