Adeleke cautions against break down of law and order

Published

on

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has cautioned against any form of conduct or activities that may be inimical to the peace and progress of the State.

In a statement signed by Olawale Rasheed, the spokesperson of the Governor, Adeleke also directed all security agencies in the State to ensure a strict maintenance of law and order.

The warning is coming on the heels of the ruling of the Federal High Court, Osogbo on Friday which refused an oral application for stay of execution filed by the sacked elected Osun local government officials.

The Osun Government is alleging that the ruling had generated negative reactions from the opposition party and their legal functionaries with alleged incitement to violence.

Recall that on Friday, November 25, 2022, the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo declared the Osun local government election as illegal.

The Court presided by Justice Ayo Nathaniel Emmanuel, while nullifying the process, directed the elected Chairmen and councillors to vacate their offices.

In line with the judgment, the governor on Monday, November 28, 2022, directed the highest ranking civil servants to take over administration in the local governments, local council development areas and area offices.

The governor on Monday in order to avert a break down of law and order also directed security agencies to move in and maintain the status quo.

The governor also suspended the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), Segun Oladitan and other members of the OSIEC Board and also the Certificate of Returns already issued to the elected Chairmen and councillors were also withdrawn.

DAILY POST recalls that on August 15, 2022, OSIEC announced that it would be holding local government election in the State.

However, the Osun Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) objected to the election and dragged OSIEC before the Federal High Court.

The party which called for the arrest and prosecution of the OSIEC chairman, maintained that the election was illegal and ran contrary to the Electoral Act, 2022. Meanwhile, the Osun State House of Assembly after the local government election gave OSIEC a pass mark.

Report corrupt lawyers for disciplinary action – Oboagwina urges Nigerians

Published

on

The convener of Easyread Legal’s Mentorship Programme, Caleb Oboagwina, has called on members of the Nigerian public to report any lawyer found engaging in corrupt practices for disciplinary action. Oboagwina made this call while speaking to newsmen at the 2nd Externs General Conference and 10th Year Anniversary of the programme on Saturday in Abuja.

Decrying reports of corruption in the legal profession, Oboagwina said corrupt lawyers are sanctioned by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.
If you find anyone wanting, don’t be silent. Report such a person immediately for disciplinary action against him or her to serve as a deterrent to others nursing the same evil and unethical ideas.

“Don’t be afraid. Report them no matter their reputation in the profession,” he said. He tasked aspiring lawyers on hardwork and dedication to excel in the profession whenever they are eventually called to the Nigerian Bar, urging young ones to see the profession as something that would redeem the society.

“If we have lawyers who would stand up for their rights, especially when they go up in the judiciary, and shun corruption, the society would be a better place.” Also speaking, the 2nd Vice President of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Clement Chukwuemeka, charged lawyers to speak to power and hold the government accountable when it fails in its responsibility of providing social amenities or infrastructural facilities to the masses.

According to him, the responsibility of lawyers is not to make money but to provide justice where the need arises, especially those who do not have anyone to speak for them.

“Judges grant bail to the high and mighty in corrupt cases after which such cases may be swept under the carpet but the poor are being sent to jail for minor cases because they have no one to speak for them,” he added. Easyread Legal’s Mentorship Programme is a platform that renders assistance to students of the Nigerian Law School engaging in Bar Part ll programme.
